A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO RECOVERY

Treat the Injury. Support the Healing Process.

Traditional orthopedic care often relies on medication, injections to suppress inflammation, rehabilitation, or surgery. Each has an important role, but some patients may benefit from a biologically focused treatment approach.

Regenerative medicine uses biological substances and targeted procedures to influence the local environment surrounding injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

Orthobiologic treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) use components of the patient's own blood to support natural tissue-repair signaling. Outcomes depend on the condition, treatment preparation, and patient selection.

At PRO Sports Medicine, we combine precise diagnostic assessment with targeted procedures and structured physical rehabilitation.

OUR REGENERATIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Targeted Solutions for Musculoskeletal Conditions

No single regenerative treatment is appropriate for every injury. The treatment strategy depends on tissue damage, imaging findings, previous treatment, individual health, and functional goals.

TREATMENT 02

PRP + Alpha-2-Macroglobulin

A2M is a naturally occurring plasma protein that acts as a protease inhibitor. Concentrated A2M may be combined with PRP as part of a treatment strategy for degenerative joint conditions.

The objective is to combine platelet signaling with additional regulation of tissue-degrading enzymes. Clinical evidence for injected A2M remains limited.

COMBINATION ORTHOBIOLOGIC APPROACH
TREATMENT 03

Plasma Prolotherapy

A plasma-based injection approach used in selected musculoskeletal treatment plans.

It may be incorporated into a broader rehabilitation or orthobiologic protocol, depending on the injury and clinical assessment. Evidence varies by indication.

PLASMA-BASED SUPPORTIVE TREATMENT
TREATMENT 04

Shockwave / EPAT Therapy

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy applies mechanical energy to targeted tissues and may be considered for certain chronic tendon and soft-tissue disorders.

It can be used independently or alongside selected injection treatments and progressive rehabilitation.

NONINVASIVE MECHANICAL THERAPY
TREATMENT 05

Tenex / Percutaneous Tendon Procedures

Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive procedures may be used to address certain areas of chronic abnormal tendon tissue.

These procedures are structurally directed rather than orthobiologic injections, but can fit within a comprehensive recovery strategy.

IMAGE-GUIDED TENDON TREATMENT
TREATMENT 06

Physical Therapy & Recovery Optimization

Biological treatment alone does not replace proper rehabilitation. Progressive loading, mobility, strengthening, and biomechanical correction remain essential parts of most recovery plans.

Your rehabilitation program is adjusted to the tissue involved, symptoms, and functional progress.

INTEGRATED RECOVERY MANAGEMENT
CONDITIONS WE EVALUATE

From Sports Injuries to Chronic Joint Pain

Regenerative treatment may be considered for selected acute, chronic, and degenerative musculoskeletal conditions. Not every condition responds equally or is an appropriate indication for injection therapy.

01

Tendon Injuries

Rotator cuff tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, patellar tendinopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, and plantar fascia disorders.

02

Joint Arthritis

Selected cases of knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle osteoarthritis, including degenerative conditions associated with chronic joint pain.

03

Ligament Injuries

Partial ligament injuries, chronic sprains, selected instability patterns, and soft-tissue injuries that may benefit from targeted treatment.

04

Shoulder Conditions

Rotator cuff tendon disease, partial tears, degenerative joint conditions, and selected chronic shoulder pain presentations.

05

Knee Injuries

Patellar tendon disorders, knee osteoarthritis, selected ligament injuries, and certain meniscal conditions.

06

Persistent Soft-Tissue Pain

Chronic overuse injuries, myotendinous disorders, scar-related symptoms, and selected sports-related soft-tissue conditions.

PRECISION MATTERS

Advanced Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Guidance

Before treatment begins, identifying the correct pain-generating structure is essential.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows real-time visualization of tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, and selected joint structures.

During suitable procedures, ultrasound guidance helps visualize the needle, nearby structures, and precise anatomical target.

UNDERSTANDING THE SCIENCE

How Orthobiologics Interact With Tissue

Orthobiologic therapies may influence cellular signaling and the environment around damaged tissue. These biological mechanisms do not necessarily translate into predictable clinical outcomes.

Growth Factor Signaling

Platelets release proteins involved in cellular communication, tissue repair, and extracellular matrix remodeling.

Collagen Remodeling

Certain biological signals may influence collagen synthesis and organization in damaged tendons and ligaments.

Inflammatory Regulation

Orthobiologic strategies may modify local inflammatory signaling in selected joint and soft-tissue conditions.

Joint Environment

Some therapies are studied for their effects on joint symptoms and local catabolic activity. Cartilage regeneration has not been established as a predictable clinical outcome.

Mechanical Loading

Appropriate rehabilitation provides mechanical stimuli necessary for building tissue tolerance and functional strength.

Individualized Recovery

Tissue quality, injury severity, nutrition, health, sleep, medication use, and rehabilitation influence recovery.

Understanding Emerging Treatment Technologies

Regenerative medicine encompasses several different treatment technologies. Their clinical evidence, indications, and regulatory status are not interchangeable.

EDUCATIONAL TOPIC

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate

BMAC is prepared from the patient's own bone marrow and contains a mixture of cells and signaling molecules.

It remains an area of ongoing study for selected orthopedic applications. BMAC should not be described as a guaranteed cartilage-regeneration or stem-cell replacement procedure.

NOT AN ADVERTISED IN-CLINIC SERVICE
INVESTIGATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Extracellular Vesicles & Exosomes

Extracellular vesicles are particles involved in cellular communication. Exosomes are one category being investigated in regenerative medicine.

Exosome products are not FDA-approved for orthopedic treatment. These therapies remain investigational and should not be confused with established autologous PRP procedures.

Regenerative Medicine FAQs

Common questions about treatment eligibility, recovery, safety, and expectations.

What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is a broad area of healthcare focused on restoring or supporting damaged tissues. In sports medicine, orthobiologic treatments may use biological materials, including components collected from a patient's own blood, to influence tissue-repair processes.
How is PRP different from a cortisone injection?
Corticosteroid injections are commonly used to reduce inflammation and symptoms. PRP instead delivers concentrated blood-derived platelets and associated signaling proteins. The two treatments have different mechanisms and clinical evidence, and neither is appropriate for every condition.
Which injuries may benefit from PRP?
PRP may be considered for selected cases of knee osteoarthritis, chronic lateral epicondylitis, and certain tendon disorders. Evidence varies substantially among conditions. An evaluation is needed to determine whether PRP is appropriate.
What is the purpose of adding A2M to PRP?
Alpha-2-macroglobulin is a naturally occurring plasma protein that inhibits certain proteases. Combining A2M with PRP is intended to address different aspects of the joint environment. Human clinical effectiveness data are still limited, and the combination is not proven to regenerate lost cartilage.
Are regenerative injections painful?
Patients may experience discomfort during the procedure and temporary pain, swelling, or stiffness afterward. The experience varies by treatment site and procedure. The provider will discuss appropriate comfort measures and post-procedure care.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery timelines depend on the tissue treated and the intervention performed. Some patients notice changes over several weeks, while tissue remodeling and rehabilitation may extend over several months. Improvement is not guaranteed.
Is regenerative medicine safe?
Procedures involving a patient's own blood avoid some risks associated with donor-derived materials, but are not risk-free. Potential risks include bleeding, infection, post-injection pain, tissue irritation, and inadequate improvement. Individual risks should be reviewed before treatment.
Will regenerative medicine prevent surgery?
Some patients may experience sufficient symptom improvement to postpone or avoid a procedure. However, regenerative treatment cannot correct every structural problem, and significant tears, mechanical instability, or advanced joint damage may require surgical evaluation.
Does insurance cover PRP or A2M?
Coverage depends on the insurance policy, diagnosis, and treatment. Many regenerative injections are not routinely covered by commercial insurance. Our office can explain the financial arrangements and treatment options before scheduling a procedure.
How do I know which treatment is right for me?
The process begins with a clinical evaluation and review of relevant imaging. Treatment recommendations are based on the injury, tissue condition, health history, prior treatment response, evidence, and recovery goals.
